The magician shows his hands to be empty. He states that for his next trick he requires three sponge balls. Suddenly one appears in his right hand and two in his left hand. These are passed out for examination. Two are placed in a spectator's hand, the third vanishes and when the spectator opens his hand there are three.

Next he places two sponge balls in his left hand and the third in his pocket. Opening his hand there are now three. Once more he places two in his left hand and the third in his pocket and asks the spectator how many he has in his hand. They answer 'two' to which he says 'but I only have one in my hand', whereupon he opens his hand to reveal a large cut-out of the number 1.
